An Essay towards a Topographical History of the County of Norfolk by Francis Blomefield. Complete set of 11 volumes, published between 1805 and 1810. Second edition. Full calf binding, re-cased, though not recently, retaining the original leather boards and spines, with emblems of Hudson Gurney (1775-1864) to the centre. 4 boards detached from the blocks. Volume 1 with some newspaper clippings pasted to the inner covers. Blocks are generally sound, though there are some marginal notes and underlining in ink to a few lines and sections, heaviest to the Castor (Caister) section. Half title in volume 3 bound in upside down, tear in the map. Volume 7 lacking the Walpole pedigrees, though volume 8 had an additional plate of the Mayors of Lynn Regis. Of special interest is a manuscript fragment (c1600) bound in at p512 in volume 6.

The Paston Letters - Original Letters, written during the Reigns of Henry VI, Edward IV, and Richard III, by various Persons of Rank or Consequence with Notes, Historical and Explanatory; and Authenticated by Engravings of Autographs, Fac Similes, Paper-Marks and Seals - John Fenn (Ed). Complete in 5 volumes. Published 1787 (v1 & 2), 1789 (v3 & 4) and 1835 (v5). All volumes First Editions. Uniformly quarter bound in half brown leather, with matching title plates to the spines. All edges red. Light toning to the pages. The first 3 volumes with hand coloured frontispieces, the colouring most likely being later. Fenn's edition of the Paston Letters was the first printing of this invaluable collection shedding light on the life of an aristocratic family (the Pastons, later Earls of Yarmouth) in the fifteenth century. The editor obtained the documents from the executors of a chemist in Diss, Norfolk, and later presented the originals for volumes I and II to George III, receiving a knighthood soon after. The work was nevertheless suspected for years to be a forgery, until the material (including what he had given to the King) resurfaced in various country houses in the later part of the nineteenth century. The fifth volume was sent to the press posthumously by Serjeant Frere, Fenn's nephew (Ency. Brit., 11th edn.) An exemplary set indeed.

Complete 3 volume set, published 1872, 1874 and 1875 respectively. 403pp; 440pp; 406pp. Perlustration means making a detailed survey, and the work is arranged in the form of a tour around the streets of Yarmouth. Signature of the Author tipped in at the title page of volume 1. Some spotting and age toning, as expected, as well as a few marginal notes in red ink here and there. Included with this lot is a manuscript bound index to the perlustrations, bound in quarter leather.

Published in London by Longmans, Green, Reader & Dyer, 1867. First Edition. Large Paper Edition. One of a reputed 12 copies containing early photographic plates of views around the town, some folding and laid to cloth, including a number of images of ‘The Rows’ - the series of narrow, cramped streets in Great Yarmouth. This copy has a penned notation to the upper title page - “Presented to me by the Author in 1867 - W White.” Folding plan of Great Yarmouth to the start of the book, splitting to the folds. Block sound, though with some webbing reinforcement in a couple of places. Pages age toned, as expected, with some scattered foxing spots, leaves unevenly trimmed in places, with the odd short closed edge tear. Quarter bound in red leather with hard-cover cloth boards, worn to the edges and corners, general wear to the extremities and covers. Most likely rebound at some point, though sympathetically restored, retaining the original boards and much of the spine leather, though the endpapers appear more recent. Spine titled in gilt, with the emblem of Great Yarmouth to the heel.

James Blomfield Rush Murder Interest - Vellum bound manuscript letter book, containing copies of letters sent to and from Isaac Preston of Beeston in Norfolk, variously dated in the years 1776 and 1777. The volume is signed by Isaac Preston, 1775 to the inner cover. Isaac Preston was the grandfather of the like named Isaac Preston, who would go on to inherit Stanfield Hall in Norfolk, changing his surname to Jermy in doing so. In 1836 Isaac leased Stanfield Hall farm to James Blomfield Rush, who had previously acted as land agent for him. Rush would later also borrow money from Isaac to purchase Potash Farm, though he subsequently become delinquent on the debt, and proceedings were taken against him by Isaac. Towards the end of 1847, Rush was declared bankrupt. The following year, in 1848, Rush would take his revenge on Isaac and his son, by shooting them both dead at Stanfield Hall, as well as injuring 2 females at the property. Rush was soon apprehended, found guilty at trial, and sentenced to death. On Saturday, April 21st, 1849, rush was executed on the gallows outside Norwich Castle in front of an estimated crowd of 15,000 to 20,000 people. The murders had caught the attention of the Victorian public to such an extent, that a special train from London was laid on specifically for those wishing to attend the execution.

Endpapers replaced. Notable for the 20 detailed full page plates of dissected anatomy, as called for, with a further plate to the appendix section. Plates with browning, foxing and damp marking to the corners and edges. Very Scarce Georgian Anatomical volume. A foundational anatomical and surgical text written and illustrated by the renowned Scottish anatomist and surgeon Sir Charles Bell (1774-1842). First published between 1798 and 1799 while Bell was still a medical student, the book provided highly accurate, step-by-step guidance on dissecting and displaying human anatomical structures.

A New and Compleat Body of Practical Botanical Physic, from the medical plants of the Vegetable Kingdom by Edward Baylis. Published in London by Stace and Maids, 1791. Volume 1, though no subsequent volumes were published. Notable for the stunning hand coloured plates of various plants - 38 (of 40?), lacking plate 21 and 22. Plate 27 and 28 transposed. Closed tear to pp276, with an edge tear to pp149. Bumping to the upper block corner, crease to plate 11, and a corner tear to plate 6, though not affecting the image. Bound in contemporary full green leather, lined in gilt. Boards with wear to the corners and edges. Banded spines with gilt titles on Morocco. Title plate taped on volume 1. Volume 1 contains the text, with volume 2 being the plate section. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Blocks sound, with foxing to the blanks, though the plates are generally in good order, save for the odd spot here and there.

Volume I, Dated 1862, contains 57 Coloured Plates; Volume II, Dated 1863, Contains 63 Coloured Plates; Volume III, Dated 1864, Contains 59 Coloured Plates and Volume IV, Dated 1865, Contains 73 Coloured Plates, a Total of 252 Plates. Blocks are sound, with some light age toning, light scattered foxing to in volume 2. Bound in contemporary half calf, lined in gilt. Banded spines with titles in gilt - vignettes of fish and fishing equipment to the compartments. All edges gilt. Bookplates of Horation Granville Murray Stewart (1834-1904) to the inner covers. Scarce as the complete set.

Beautifully rebound by David Ferrow, bookseller of Great Yarmouth, in 1989 on behalf of a previous owner, who has tipped in a note regarding the rebind, verso of the front endpaper. Illustrated with 160 woodcuts. Age related toning to the pages. Penned date to the title page (ibid) Journal of a Naturalist (by J L Knapp). Published by John Murray, 1829. Second edition, though published the same year as the first. Half bound in leather, with gilt on red Morocco plate to the upper spine. Spine dry, chipped, with splitting to the upper fore-edge. Penned owner’s name to the second blank, some scattered foxing and age toning. 13 page section of engravings to the rear of the volume, though plates numbered to 7, the final plate being hand coloured (ibid) an 1880 copy of White’s Selborne, bound in full leather prize binding and a well worn copy of the Insect Hunter’s Companion by Joseph Green, Published by Swan Sonnenschein & Co, London, 1880 (5).

First Edition. Half bound in green leather, lined in gilt. Banded spine, with embellished compartments, stamped title to the upper spine and date to the heel. Block edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Block sound, with some scattered foxing, mainly to the blanks. Wonderfully Illustrated with twelve chromolithographic plates, eleven being in colour, collated, complete. Additional blank leaves bound in at the rear of the book. Gosse (1810-1888), was an English naturalist and populariser of natural science and pioneered the study of marine biology. He is credited with creating and stocking the world's first public marine aquarium at London Zoo in 1853.

Block sound, with some damping and heavy spotting to the plates, as is standard for Dickens titles of this age. All edges marbled.
